Do you remember the days of good old fashioned love letters?
A young soldier goes off to war and writes a woman he went out on just one date with letters from afar. She swoons. She anticipates. She runs out to the mailbox every day and looking for that letter from her GI.
When we were in summer camp, we used to write letters to our parents. I remember mail call at summer camp during rest hours right after lunch. You’d get a post card from mom or a letter from dad. The days of writing beautiful love letters seem to be over. Now we’re a self-absorbed society who relies on text messages or tweets.
We want to get the point across as quickly as possible. Even our email messages are getting much shorter than they used to. But love letters are things of real beauty and connection. We seem to have forgotten how good it feels reading a passion filled note. When the last time you got an e-mail that was full of love and emotion?
When was the last time YOU wrote a letter that was really heartfelt and sent it?
Think about how amazing it would be to go to work one day and get a letter from someone you’re in love with, or somebody you’re just starting to date. A beautiful relationship ready to blossom. I really believe we should bring back love letters. I believe our texts should be a lot kinder, and a lot more open. I think we need to remember how beautiful words can be. Words can make you feel amazing. Let’s bring back the love letters like the young GIs used to send. Or the days of summer camp when you got that special letter from home.
How about the next time you’re dating someone you send them an e-mail. Send them something beautiful. Let them know how great they make you feel, and how much you care about them. Talk to your lover. Get close to them. If you’re not with them, send them an email. Something they can read over and over again. Or maybe write them a card and leave it on the windshield of their car.
Bring back the written word, because it’s soon to be extinct between lovers, and it’s one of the most connecting, beautiful things you could possibly do. Even if you’re not a great writer, even if you’re not someone who’s great at it, just pour your feelings out. Give it a try guys!
