Ladies, I know you love to talk, but I’ve got to tell you a secret.

You know how you love to give men “the recap”, where you tell us everything that happened to you that day?

Well…we don’t care.  We’re not interested.

It’s not that we don’t care about you; we just don’t care to listen. The stories are very long and detailed, and most men aren’t wired to receive information that way.

We’re not recappers, we’re highlight people.

Most men would rather spend the day watching Sportscenter rather than the actual sport itself.

Why?

Highlights!

Why do we avoid family reunions with you?  Because of the very long you-had-to-be-there stories from people we don’t know.

Boring.

So the next time you go out with one of your best friends and you want us to come along, just bring a flip video camera and give us the highlights.  Capture your friends, one dramatic thing that happened, and then cut to the end.

That’s it.  If it’s under a minute it’s perfect.

Next time you drag us to the family for the weekend, bring the video camera and just give us the highlights. Because that’s what we want, short little ESPN sound bites.  We don’t want long, dramatic tales.

That’s what your friends are there for.

Your friends love it.  Some women love drama.  As men, we don’t like drama.  We avoid drama.

How many times do you fight with us, and we just sit there and go silent.  You ever notice that?  When you’re lecturing us, when we’ve done something wrong and you’re recapping all the things that we did wrong in the relationship, and we just sit there and nod our heads—do you know why?

It’s because we just want the ESPN version of it—those 15 to 30 seconds.  We can’t stand being lectured for five or ten minutes and hearing all the awful things that we’ve done. We just want the short little sound bites.

Keep that in mind the next time you say to a man, “So tell me about your day.”
