Hello, Mr. Perfectionism. Good to meet you.
How is your perfectionism life going?
I’m sure it’s torturous every single day.
Want to know how I know this? It’s because you haven’t realized the one simple truth about life, which is this:
Life is about making mistakes.
Once you make a series of mistakes, you have an opportunity to make different mistakes.
So many people will tell me at the time, well, I don’t want to make any more mistakes. Hopefully, I learned.
Well, hopefully, you did too.
But I’ve got to tell you something. In my 55 years on this planet, I have made mistakes over and over again. Different ones.
You see, every relationship I’ve ever had I’ve learned from.
Every experience that I’ve ever had, I’ve learned from it. Whether it was…
I have learned from everything I’ve done, and I have made many mistakes.
I could sit here, and I could list the mistakes that I’ve made.
Some of you get all twisted about the mistakes you make with a girl.
Oh, my god. You made a mistake!
And the other person, well, obviously just didn’t give a fuck about you enough to allow you to make that mistake and move forward.
My mistakes are bigger. Trust me.
I bought a house while things were expensive. And now, I’m sitting here staring at the real estate market like the worst reminder in the world.
The women, I don’t even remember the ones I made mistakes with. That’s how many there have been.
But to tell you the truth, if I made a mistake, they made a mistake too.
Because for every mistake that you make, guess what?
The other person makes mistakes, as well.
Mistakes are made by human beings every single day.
There is no way to avoid them.
They’re going to happen. They’re going to happen to you on a regular basis. That’s what life is all about.
Every single day, there’s going to be a different set of mistakes that happen for you in your life. Some may be big. Some may be small. Some may be devastating at the time. Others may be mild.
But if you continue to pursue perfection, you’re never going to be kind to yourself.
Life is a series of mistakes, and there is nothing you can do that will stop the mistakes from coming.
Get that through your head once and for all. We all make them. We’re all human beings. There’s no perfect human being out there at all. There’s no perfect anything.
There’s no perfect car. There’s no perfect house. There’s no perfect day.
What you can do, though, is own your mistakes. Learn from them so you can make the new set of mistakes.
And when you make the new set of mistakes, own them. Learn from them, so you can make the next set of mistakes.
It really is that simple.
It’s going to make you far happier than driving yourself neurotic thinking about all the mistakes you make and constantly, constantly beating yourself up.
