The Whisper
By David Wygant

Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind, ignorance is kind
There’s no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you’ll find

Should’ve known better

I feel so unsure
as I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies, something in your eyes
calls to mind the silver screen
and all its sad goodbyes . . .

For those of you who are familiar with George Michael as the lead singer of Wham, I want you to start singing these lyrics in your head. No, I’m not trying to torture you with a song you don’t want to hear. If I wanted to drive you crazy, I would be singing Silent Night . . . but my version:

Silent night
Crazy night
All these women
standing around the bar tonight

Wish I knew
Wish I might
Wish I knew what to say to her tonight
I am so sick of all my silent nights . . .

So where exactly am I going with this? I’m glad you asked.

How many of you go to a bar on a Friday night and stand around with your hands in your pockets living a silent night? You do this every Friday night.

You see women you want to speak with and you have NO idea what to do or what to say. As Richard Dreyfus said in Close Encounters of the Third Kind: “We are not alone.” The majority of men stand around in a bar not having fun, and dealing with their version of silent night boring night.

So how does Wham’s “Careless Whisper” come into play here? I am going to share with you right now a fast and easy way to speak to the women in a bar to whom you are most attracted, so that you can break your string of silent night boring nights. I call it “the art of the whisper.”

Women go out to bars to have fun with their friends, but they also go to bars hoping they will meet a man who is fun, confident and ballsy. Most men in a bar will hover near and stare at the women to whom they want to talk. Women see this.

The longer you stare, the creepier you become to them. They know you have no guts to come over and talk to them. They know you are trying to consume large quantities of alcohol so that you’ll have the courage to come over and talk to them. They’re onto you. When you finally do walk over to her two hours too late, you open her up with something boring and safe.

This is a bar guys. You have got to stand out from the crowd! You also have to learn how to be playful.

What I am about to tell you and teach you is one way to engage in a little bit of playful teasing with a woman in a bar. The next time you see a woman in a bar and you are checking each other out, I want you to walk over to her immediately after she checks you out.

Walk directly up to her, look like you’re about to walk past her, and then whisper this in her ear: “I caught you checking me out.” Then pull back away from her ear, look directly in her eyes, smile and say “Were you just going to stand there all night and say nothing . . . or were you just going to have a few drinks to get enough liquid courage to come over and talk to me?”

You just did something that no other guy does. You basically made fun of every guy in that room. She knows it and you know it.

You also whispered in her ear which is very erotic and sensual. Think about when you have sex with a woman. You are looking deep into her eyes, then you pull her close to you and you whisper some erotic dirty talk in her ear.

It’s a very sensual opener. It also enlightens her senses. So not only were you funny by teasing her, but you also subconsciously turned her on.

Now I know what you’re thinking “David, what do I say next?” Listen to what she has to say. I guarantee her response will be something fun.

Maybe she’ll say “I wasn’t checking you out.” Then you can have some fun and grab her friend (which shows even more confidence), and you can say “Let’s ask your friend. You saw her checking me out, right?” Now you’re bringing in the friend. Listen to what the friend has to say. If you pay attention to what they have to say, you are going to have some very playful banter.

You have now eliminated your silent night lonely night with a careless whisper. Who would have thought that Bing Crosby and George Michael could be so much fun?
