Whoa, sorry about that. I almost forgot to take my mask off. You know, because… I wear this mask so often, I forget it’s even on.

See, this isn’t just my Halloween mask. Heck, I don’t even dress up for Halloween anymore because I’m not ten years old – or maybe I’ll go trick or treating with my daughter…

But, that’s not what this is. THIS is… my representative.

It’s the person I dress up as every day.

See, you probably thought costumes and masks were just something you wore once a year when you were a kid.

When in reality, you’ve been wearing the same costume, the costume of the representative, your whole life.

And what your representative is is real simple: it’s the person you think everyone wants to see.

You go out on a date and you think, I need to behave this way. I need to make the other person think this is who I am. Because if I’m not wearing my representative costume, there’s no way they’ll like me.

No?

I can see some of you shaking your head right now. I can hear you saying “No way, David! I’m honest. I don’t lie to people about who I really am.”

Well, let me ask you this, then. If you’re dating online, how many of your pictures actually look like you?

Or how about this… how often do you seek validation from Facebook and Instagram? You share something and you check back 5 minutes later… “Oh my god I hope someone liked this! I hope someone out there thinks what I shared is really clever and profound and funny!”

Do you still consider yourself totally honest? Do you still think you’re totally authentic?

Do you still think you’re completely comfortable being yourself 100% of the time? Because that’s why we have our representatives in the first place.

We’re not okay with us, ourselves, so we have to put on our masks every day and show the world the person we think they want to see.

And if you think you’ll ever stand a chance at love, ever stand a chance at life and happiness and everything you’ve ever wanted, while you’re wearing this mask… well, then you’re going to have to keep an eye out for tomorrow’s video.

Because tomorrow, I’m going to expose my own representative.
