Sounds beautiful, doesn’t it?

Go out on a date this weekend and meet the man you’re going to spend the rest of your life with. Head down to the store to grab some groceries and run into your soul mate; the man of your dreams who just seems to understand you all the time.

Love is such a beautiful thing.  There’s nothing like connecting with someone on that deep emotional level. Finding someone you fall totally in love with, and start to plan a future with. Meeting a man for the rest of your life is something which will change you forever.

My Head Coach Brett, went out with this woman the other day.  They sat having a coffee and she suddenly asked him, “What do you really want in life?”

“Love,” he replied. “What about you?”

Without hesitation she said, “I want to fall in love for the rest of my life.”

Here’s what’s wrong with that phrase.

She put an outcome on love.  It’s a dream, and it’s a desire. But she clearly wasn’t present when she said it. It shouldn’t be your goal to fall in love once for the rest of your life. The real thing you want is to fall in love every single day with the same person for the rest of your life.

Being present in the moment is the key to successful relationships.

I truly believe that in order to be in love for the rest of your life, you need to be in love with every single moment you are with that person on a daily basis.  Every moment is precious.  Every moment is amazing.  Every moment is special.

Real love is a minute-by-minute, second-by-second proposition.  Because if we concentrate and stay present in the seconds we have with somebody, the moments that we create, the future will always take care of itself.  You’ll end up looking at your partner, your lover, and say, I cannot believe we’ve been together 10 years now; it’s so amazing.

We do it with our children if you think about it.  We don’t look at them when they’re born and say, “Alright, for the rest of my life I’m going to love you like this, this, and this.”

When you’re a good parent you look at your kid as a beautiful person, and beautiful soul every single day of their life.  If you remain present with your child, you don’t miss a moment.  You cherish every single one. You cherish every fall, every giggle, and every ice-cream stain on your carpet!

So the next time you ask yourself the question, “How can I meet a man for the rest of my life?” Just say this to yourself:

“I’d like to be with somebody the rest of my life, but I know it takes a minute-by-minute, second-by-second commitment to being present in a relationship. And I understand I need to enjoy every beautiful moment that arises between us.  That way, we can have the rest of our lives to talk about the moment-by-moment, minute-by-minute, minute-by-minute moments that we created between the two of us.

Love isn’t a one off event. It should something you enjoy every second of every day you’re lucky enough to be in a loving relationship.
