Online Dating And Used CarsHave you ever noticed how alike online dating profiles and used car adverts are?

A while back, I was car shopping for a friend. Every single car I emailed about, the owner messaged me back to tell me how perfect the car was. I said to one guy, “If the car has 80,000 miles on it there must be something mechanically needing work.”

The answer came back, “The car is in perfect mechanical condition.”

“Are there any scratches on the car?” I asked another guy.

“There’s one minor tiny mark on it and nothing more.” He replied.

I mean…with used cars you expect there to be SOMETHING that needs attention. Maybe a tire that needs replacing, or a dent somewhere. Perhaps it would need a new set of lights of something. I must have contacted about ten people, and every single one told me their car was in amazing condition inside and out. I’m thinking to myself, I didn’t know there were so many perfect used cars around. Why pay money for a new car when all the used cars are like new? Then I thought to myself…

This was just like online dating. Everyone’s profile tells us how amazing they are. Nobody has any flaws, other than maybe the music they listen to or something. It’s just like reading used car adverts. “Woman, 39 years-old, low mileage, not much baggage in the trunk, and very warm. Loves going for long walks on the beach and open to meeting a man as fantastic as me.”

The Importance Of Online Dating Honesty

When you think about it, we’re all just a bunch of used cars lying to each other. The trouble is we’re really only lying to ourselves. We’re all flawed in one way or another. Just like used cars have something wrong with them. There’s no such thing as a perfect used car. It’s a used car. We’re used people. We’ve all had experiences in life. We all have fears. We all worry about being hurt. We all have certain parts of our character we need to work on. Nobody is perfect.

And here’s the thing. The Internet lets you Google people before you meet them so you can check out their history and online presence anyway. If you lie on your online dating profile, you’re going to be found out at some point. There’s a company called Car Fax you can contact to see whether a car has been in an accident or how many owners it’s had. Wouldn’t it be funny if there was a company called People Fax. That could be a lot of fun. You can look at people’s past relationships. You can see what their sexually history is like. You can see how many times they’ve been damaged physically or emotionally, and see what marks are left still. I mean in some ways, Google lets us do it already. Google most people’s name and you’ll find something about them online.

Stop trying to make yourself sound so perfect on your online dating profiles. We’re all flawed, and that’s what makes us beautiful. A lot of used cars have amazing character, just like we do. To tell you the truth, there’s nothing wrong with used cars. If there’s anything wrong with them you can take them to a mechanic. Think of me as your love mechanic, because that’s what I really am. In fact, I like that term. Maybe I should start calling myself the love mechanic. I love to fix people, and in turn help you to fix yourself. You’re beautiful, and your flaws are what makes you uniquely you.

So the next time someone wants to take you out for a test drive, allow them to drive the real you. Allow them to get to know the real you, because that’s all we have. Embrace your mechanical issues, and you’ll soon find someone who’s happy to give you all the love, care, and careful handling you need!
