Working Out

What a great bootcamp we are having!!!

The guys have really grasped everything we have gone over and yesterday on the beach in Malibu we had a blast.

We did a drill that really helped them overcome approach anxiety forever!!

I’ve been asked many times to do a blog about working out.

Personally, I’m a workout nut: I do yoga; I run on the treadmill, I hike hills, I swim, and I do weights. Why do I do all of this? Because I’m vain and I like to look good!

Well, that is true enough, but I also like to stay in shape and feel good about myself. One of the benefits of working out is being able to feel better about yourself. You can look at yourself in the mirror and be proud of who you are.

You don’t have excuses. Many people don’t like their bodies but they don’t do anything about it – they live in Excuseland, where anything and everything prevents them from meeting people.

Working out is really healthy for your body. You can extend your lifespan and it makes you feel great.

Even better: going to the gym, going hiking, and going to yoga classes gives you the opportunity to meet more people! Much more can happen when you work out besides just looking fantastic and feeling great.

For everybody out there that doesn’t work out, let me make a suggestion for you: you don’t have to go on a rigid workout plan where you lose 20 pounds TODAY; you want to go on a workout plan where you gradually lose weight. You want a workout plan that makes you feel good.

You also have to figure out what type of workout is best for you. If you don’t like to run, don’t! There are plenty of other things to try. There are classes, there is yoga; there are all types of workouts and all types of things to do to be active. Find what is best for you.

You also have to set realistic goals. Don’t try to lose 30 pounds in a week! It’s not going to happen! You want to start taking weight off and keeping it off over a gradual period of time.

This means that you’ll have to work out regularly, and change your diet. Diet regimen is very important; you really are what you eat. It’s very important to maintain a very clean diet. Lay off of the processed foods. It takes a combination of the right foods and the right type of exercise to keep the weight off.

Keep in mind that just like dating – just like learning how to meet the opposite sex – you have to keep it up over a period of time. You can’t just expect miracles to happen instantaneously. The longer you keep it up, the longer the effects of this lifestyle will last.

I’m going to share a story with you: when I was 18 years old, I was a “tall drink of water” – that’s what my mother used to call me. I was one of those really skinny water glasses – the ones that don’t hold all that much water at all. I was just a tall drink of water.

I wanted so bad to not be so skinny anymore. I tried everything to put weight on. In college, I used to make bread sandwiches – I’d take two pieces of processed white bread, put a piece of processed American cheese in between, and eat the entire pound of cheese and the entire loaf of bread in one sitting, hoping to gain weight.

The only thing that happened as a result of this was the unbelievable stomachaches I would have every morning when I woke up! I didn’t gain any weight; I would actually become ill and LOSE weight!

Then I decided to begin working out. I started very slowly and then began to increase the weights. I kept noticing the subtlest changes in my body, and every day I kept motivated and continued at it.

That’s the thing about life – staying at it and keeping motivated will create amazing results for you. It is when you quit and don’t push yourself that you don’t get very far.

So work out! Find the right workout plan for yourself that will really suit who you are and what you are about, and get ready to feel great!

Todays video is part 2 of last weeks in the field live approach in bed bath and beyond. Enjoy and have a a great Sunday.

  1. Amen, brother. I run, do yoga 3-4 times a week, bike (this is a great way to meet men), and lift weights. Being physically strong makes me feel confident. Having a tiny waist makes me look good in any outfit. Also, weight lifting and resistance training are the only ways to keep your body from looking old. Would you rather have your underarms waving in the wind as you age or have a nice toned upper body. Check out Madonna. She has a great shape for her age.

  2. yeah I hear that!!! I am 24 and I am a amateur body builder.. and it really is a great feeling of accomplishment feeling dead tired after a workout. After you do it for a couple weeks you actually feel more alive after the workout..like you are ready to take on the world. The gym is really the only place I feel completely in confident in what I am doing and how I feel. I am way more outgoing right after a hard work out. I wouldn’t say that they gym is the best place to pick up members of the other sex because everyone is into their lil grooves, but it is better then the bar.. also don’t think that guys that have big muscles have a better chance with women..lol I find it that alot of girls are very intimidated by the way we look. I really don’t understand it. I myself is horrible at getting dates.. and alot of my gym loving buddies are too. But all in all I must agree with David on this !!!

  3. I definently hear you on the diet part, David. At University, I didn’t suffer from the “Freshmen 15″ at all, and only gained weight when in my final year I studied for a semester in Madrid where my host family didn’t have the healthiest of habits and drowned their dinners in olive oil. Was it any wonder that my host brother Ruben was built like a brick house and played rugby? I think not. I gained 30 pounds in 4 months! Needless to say, since then, “the battle of the bulge” has been in full effect….Although now that I’ll be returning to Spain soon and will be left to my own devices for food, I will try to continue my health-conscious ways.
To David and his many followers: Any suggestions on living heathily in a country that still allows smoking in their enclosed-soccer stadiums?

  4. David is right. Working out can help you loose weight or gain it. Working out improves your looks, reduces your stress, and for some strange reason it builds confidence too! Just keep up with it, and you will see results.

  5. workout not only help me stay in shape, but it also help me stay in a good mood!
when i stop working out for a few days. i feel all sluggish and tired.
i pretty much follow David’s workout routine, and i surf about 5 days a week.

  6. Hmmm… I think I need to start working out again. I miss the feeling.

  7. Dear Dear Dear Dorian,”Check out Madonna. She has a great shape for her age.” I say at her age or any age, we should be so blessed with good genes and discipline. Her excellent shape is a result of this combo. What would you think about a woman who is 48 and has a 19 inch waist line? Yes, I know not bad at my age! :)

Vic: I wish that I still lived in Spain — the Mediterranean as a whole has healthier food and dining habits. People live much simpler. Olive oil is a staple in that region and has many health benefits. No matter where I’ve lived in the world, I’ve kept my Mediterranean diet. At five-nine, I’m a healthy 117 (though 13 more pounds heavier than my college years–nearly 30 years ago). I attribute all of that to good genes, tranquil mental attitude, consistent exercise (regardless of the quantity) and healthy eating habits [which includes chocolate and yummy pomegranate martinis]. I find myself managing stress and career and family demands quite efficiently and with tremendous energy. Don’t give up on you.

  8. Love’s workout no problem. Foods very particular as well.

  9. I actually am doing the 100 Pushup Challenge! Check it out!

5 weeks ago when I started, I was able to max out doing 39 in a row. 5 weeks later, I can do 20 more. Not bad, considering I also look more defined in the upper body.

Diet is also important. I admittedly slack when it comes to that, but it is important to find something that you can stick to and enjoy. It’s the only way to create that habit.

  10. I’ve lost nearly 50 pounds with this book. Although combiningfoods Suzanne’s way helps me to eat less, I believe what makes themost difference is cutting out sugar. I’m a healthier, calmer person now. I don’t eat red meat, and I still eat potatoes occasionally. You don’t have to follow the book exactly to get results! My advice to you is to closely watch how much saturated fat and sugar you consume. But the basic principles are good to follow, and it’s worth a try to see if the program works for you…
