Where Would You Go?

I was recently in the airport getting ready to leave on a flight, when I started to look around at everything happening around me.

I looked at the families with kids in strollers getting ready to leave on a trip to visit Grandma and Grandpa. I looked at businessmen wearing looks of misery on their faces as they prepared to get on yet another flight (kind of like George Clooney in Up In The Air). I looked at the couples reading books and ignoring each other.

As I looked at all these people, I realized something. I realized that I was in an airport and could really go just about anywhere in the world I wanted.

Okay, so the person I came to the airport to get on a flight and see would be bummed if I didn’t show up. The truth is that I could disappear and go anywhere I wanted.

I had my bags already packed, and had my identification and credit card. What else would I need?

I could vanish to any destination, and never be heard from again. With your credit card in hand, you actually could disappear for a long, long time.

The question really is this: To where would you disappear? If you could go anywhere in the world, to what place would you want to go?

What would you want to do once you got there? What would you want to experience? What is going on in your life right now that would make you want to escape to someplace else for a while?

I know why I would want to escape right now. It would be because right now I’m sitting next to a screaming kid. So I would want to go somewhere that was quiet and peaceful, where all the children were well-behaved. That place would also have great beaches and fantastic food of course.

Maybe I’m actually describing the place I am right now. Maybe I’ve been there for the last few weeks and none of you even noticed that I’m not in my home office in California.

Maybe I’ve already left on my escape. Maybe I did it because I just really wanted to experience something different, and I wanted to take a personal dare.

So, how daring are you? Where would you go if your best friend dropped you off at the airport?

Think about it. You have no destination in mind and you walk up to the big board and see where all the flights are heading. As you look at that board, you say to yourself “I can go anywhere I want right now. This is where I would go and why.” Where would you go?

  1. I would go to a sunny place, where I could learn to surf, on real waves, not tiny ones.
I would go to a place where the people are friendly and don’t walk around shit-faced all day long.
A place where there is a possibility of learning how to skydive. Man, thinking about it, just gets my adrenaline rushing…:D

  2. Europe…yes I know, everyone says that. But the reason why I would go is to see all the incredible artwork from Paris to Rome to Greece,I love buildings because they are a piece art themselfs. Beaches are fine but I’m not into the hot sun and you can find great food in any city.

  3. That’s exactly how i feel sometimes.

  4. What a great post David. Very intriguing. Are you in fact, on a hiatus with your new bride, or are you contemplating your future alone, as I have on several occasions throughout my life? You mentioned you were going through “some things” in an earlier post. Did you feel like you needed to get away, and think about your life’s direction, rejuvenate, and meditate? Remember, you have a baby on the way, so need to get used to “screaming kids”, and not let it raise your blood pressure, or be of concern. After raising two kids of my own, it is a normal part of parenting, and easy to get used to. Fortunately, after working for myself, pretty much 24/7 for over 25 years, I am in a position to do exactly as you ask, whenever I please. Believe it or not, after all my travels, sometimes with a dart hitting haphazardly on a map, it is always my favorite time, to be on the plane back to my home, where it is most comfortable for me to be. Like the saying goes, There really is “no place like home”, wherever that may be, for each of us.

  5. Las Vegas baby!

It is the next step in my career… I’ve been thinking about living there for the past year or so…

I expect some barriers in finding opportunities, being Canadian… Deep down I am confident in my act-LV is the place for me

  6. Japan! :) I’d love to stay there for a while. Learn the language, know the culture and see the world from a different perspective. It’s my dream to go! :) Better start on the Kanji! (All 2,000 of them haha)

  7. God, I’m such a weenie…and daring, I would go to the nearest gift shop in the airport, that’s about it.

  8. I did it! I got in my car and drove wherever for a month. I went from Houston to Key West to the Smoky Mountains to Yellowstone and then back home. I made no reservations, just stopped when I felt like stopping and stayed until I felt like moving on.

  9. I’d go to Germany, back to my home country :) . I love Germany because of the drinking age being 16 there, I can legally drink there. I can sit down with my family there and just have a beer and talk about life in general. A place with all my family and friends is a place I would go. So Germany it is :D
