In Your Eyes
By David Wygant

When is the right time in a relationship to become Lloyd Dobler, and you stand outside a woman’s house with your iPod over your head playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes?” I needed to update that situation to the 2007 version, because I don’t think too many us still have a boom box.

When is the right time in a relationship to make that other person a mix cd? You know what I’m talking about. You’re thinking all sorts of mushy thoughts, so you go into your itunes library, drag 10 songs onto a new playlist, and you burn a cd you call “12/05/07.”

You put together a selection of your favorite songs which have some pretty romantic lyrics . . . or you might have made a mistake and you put U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” in the playlist. Then you hand the cd to your date and say “I made this for you when I was thinking about you.”

Mix cds are really cute . . . there’s no better word for them. I also know women find it very romantic to receive a mix of a new man’s favorite music. It’s not WHEN you share a mix cd that is important, it is the songs you put on that cd.

If you went out on a date and she talked about world music, you can give her a cd the next time you see her with some really good world music. That’s really innocent.

If you had sex with her for the first time, but you really haven’t discussed your feelings for each other, making her a mix cd with the ten best love songs (including Air Supply) on it will really freak her out a bit.

Making a mix cd can create a moment if done right, or can really scare the hell out of someone if done wrong. So the next time you want to share your music, I suggest you lay off the mushy love songs until the two of you have used the “L” word.

Now go out on a date tonight . . . just don’t be Lloyd Dobler tomorrow.
Todays video will help you look great when you stand outside her house with your ipod over your head.
