80/20 Rule

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

I woke up yesterday morning to a panting dog . . . or an antsy dog. I figured it was maybe because I’ve been so lazy of late due to the herniation in my back between my L4 and L5 vertebrae.

So I took her to the beach for a walk, and learned quickly that apparently Daphne had a belly ache. After she did her business, I put her back in the house and went out to run an errand.

When I returned I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary . . . at first. I went upstairs, checked my email and did a few things. Then I went downstairs and there was that “brown smell” on my white rug.

Two’s Not Company

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

I woke up this morning, and I noticed that it really looked like it wanted to rain. It doesn’t rain in Southern California in June ever.

There is something here that’s called “June Gloom.” No, it’s not a bunch of desperate guys from the desert wanting to meet hot girs from the beach. It’s cloud cover caused by the hot desert air meeting the cold ocean air.

So I’m driving around with a client who flew in from New York whom I told to come here to work with me so he could enjoy the nice weather, and it’s raining. The great thing for him is that he feels like he’s home in New York . . . with the exception of not traveling on the subway.

So to make him feel totally at home, everytime we are at an intersection I make it feel like a subway stop. “Approaching Montana Avenue. Please beware of the bad drivers (substituting that for a warning to beware of the closing doors). Beep!”

Now for today’s blog…which is about being with groups of people, but in a very different way than being crowded in with them on a New York subway.

The ultimate trick for networking is what I call “the group mentality” (as opposed to “the one-up”). If you want to make the most of your time and stay in touch with all of your friends, you need to learn about the group mentality.

Many of us make the mistake of hanging out with a just a few people we already know well. Perhaps we go out on a Sunday and spend the day with a few close friends.

We invest eight hours with three or four people. This really isn’t good time management.

Instead, you should be getting six to eight people together for a two-hour brunch. In that situation you will basically become the master of ceremonies and, as such, people will look to you as the group leader. If they see you in this light, they will always invite you to the functions that they have.

This is great for the person who wants to network. You will start to notice that you are beginning to get invited to a lot of different events. Everybody wants that person who put the group together at their event, because they know that when the party gets slow or calms down that the group will always gravitate toward you.

If you’re someone who wants to meet a lot of people — whether it’s for business, personal or dating purposes — then you need to start using the group mentality. If you’re just continuing to go out with one or two other people, you won’t be able to network effectively.

The key to life is to tap into other people’s networks. The easiest way to do that is through group meetings.

Yo! And Hey Man!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Did you ever wake up all “out of sorts?” I did this morning.

What is up with hotel beds? Can they be any more torturous?

I mean, you look forward to vacations more than anything, but yet when you come back you feel as stiff as the concrete in New York City. Do you think the people who work in hotels ever actually sleep in them?

So after I returned from New York, I had to go to the chiropractor for some snap, crackle and pop . . . which also makes no sense to me. If my body was out of place before I went there, how does it know when it’s in place? You guys can help me figure that out.

Expand Your Horizons

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

So a couple of the guys and I have been just going out and looking at houses. This is something that I really enjoy doing because 1) I’m looking for a house and seem to always be looking for a house, and 2) it’s a great place to go and meet people.

House-hunting is a great way to meet people. First of all, many single women buy houses. Secondly, many women like to decorate so they go house-hunting to get ideas for décor. When you go to an open house you will always find lots of women hanging around.

And we did. We walked towards the open house, and there was a woman on her way out. How did I open her? “Hey, how was it?”

Power of the Network

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

I’m always talking about the power of the network – and no, not the one on the Verizon commercial. I don’t even use Verizon – I use T-Mobile. Why? Because I just happen to like having five friends show up all of the time on the home screen of my phone!

Not only that, but Verizon has the WORST rates when you travel internationally. When I’m traveling abroad, the last thing I want to do is roam on some ridiculous network when T-Mobile is worldwide.

But this blog is not about cell phone service – if it were, I would talk about the new, cool, exciting phones that have just come out and why I don’t have an iPhone. Do you know why I don’t use the iPhone? Because I can use my BlackBerry Pearl and type on it with one hand – I get 400 emails a day – and I can whip right through them.

If I had the iPhone, I’d have to dance around with my pointer finger and try to find everything. I like the fact that it has really fun little graphics, but I sit in front of my 24” Mac all day – I don’t need to be on the internet while I’m driving!

Then again, sitting in LA traffic is so bad, I could probably use the time to be on the internet, but I’d rather be cursing at the people in front and to the sides of me who are staring and almost running into me.

But this blog is neither about bad driving or the power of your cell phone network – or, as they say globally, your mobile.

This blog is about the power of your personal network.
