The Secret Behind My Blogs

Monday, May 11th, 2009

I was looking at my car the other day. Then I was driving and looking at the five cars driving near me, and I realized that I’ve owned each one of those cars in the last five years.

When I saw one of the cars I used to own, my first reaction was to think how cool that car is and to wonder why I had gotten rid of it. Then all of a sudden I realized that I really no longer care about what I drive.

I realized that driving in Los Angeles sucks no matter what car you’re driving. There are only a few things now that I care about having on any car I drive.

One thing that’s important to have is extra big bumpers, so I can push pedestrians through crosswalks a little faster. Power windows are also important to me, so I can easily put them up and down to let other drivers know exactly what I think of their driving skills. What’s really important, though, is an extra loud horn so I can wake up all the drivers who don’t ever seem to be paying attention.

I am waiting for someone to invent a car that can drive itself, so that I can text the entire time I’m in traffic. The fact is that driving and spending time in traffic are such a waste of time.

There are so many better things you can do in your car than just driving . . . like writing blogs. You know, people always wonder how I am able to write so many blogs and whether I actually write my own blogs.

No, there’s no secret newspaper from which I steal them. Of course I write them!

I write them when I’m in traffic, when I’m on the beach and even when I’m on the toilet. I write blogs whenever I have the urge to write one. I’ve even written blogs after sex. I have never written a blog during sex, because that would be too much like a Seinfeld episode (Remember George eating the sandwich in bed?)

i really find the best and most creative time for me to write blogs is when I’m angry. I hate driving in Los Angeles. I despise it to be honest, but for some reason or other it really makes my creative juices flow. In fact, I’ve found some of my best blog ideas come to me while I’m in traffic.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering how I do all this blog writing in traffic, especially since California passed a law where it’s illegal to type on your BlackBerry while you’re driving (Of course it is still legal to roll down your window and curse at people while you drive).

So how, then, am I doing all this blog writing in traffic? Are you wondering if I have my laptop with me as I drive around stealing wireless Internet signals? The answer to that is no. Do I use a dictation service? The answer to that is also no.

How I manage to write all these blogs in traffic is really my secret and yours to discover. In fact, the first person to guess correctly how I write blogs in traffic gets an hour of free phone coaching . . . while I’m in traffic. I don’t think anyone will figure it out, but go ahead and get the guesses started!

About The Blog…

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

One of the things that is so great about this blog is that it draws so many great comments, interesting dialogues, invites all sorts of opinions and perspectives, and even features great blog fights now and again. I love that this is an open forum. I love that I don’t censor my blog commenters. I love that people who post their questions and problems not only get my comments, but tons of other advice from all of you.

While there are certainly people who like to speak up more than others, or people who really have trouble staying on topic, in general it all seems to work in the end. Every once in a while, though, we have people who seem to forget that this is a blog community and not their personal blog.

Although I would never mention any names of course, anyone who read the comments on yesterday’s blog no doubt saw that we had someone who chose to try to make a point in their anger by posting their comments one word at a time. This became pretty disruptive and caused people to complain not only right in the comments, but in barrage of emails into my inbox.

We all need to be mindful of others’ opinions and that this is a community blog. When there is an amazing discussion going on, contribute . . . and don’t always feel like you need to change the conversation to be about you. When you do that, you are making others uncomfortable and throwing off the chemistry of the blog.

So to our ‘one word at a time” poster – you know who you are – please do not feel like you are being 86′d like a meatball sandwich at an Italian restaurant. You’re not being voted off the island . . . but please start being more mindful of others and try to keep your personal battles from monopolizing the blog.

If you really feel the need to work out personal issues not pertaining to the blog, and you need personal attention, then might I suggest you give coaching a try. In the meantime, keep the all the great comments coming and let’s continue to have great dialogue!

Have a great Saturday!

What Is Your Definition of an Amazing Day

What an amazing day so far.

Do you know what the definition of an amazing day is?

An amazing day is when you wake up past your alarm, which I did this morning.

Don’t Stop Believin’

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

What do you believe in? What do you stand for? How do you define yourself as a person in this world?

What are your beliefs? What are you willing to do, and how much are you willing to take?

Who do you respect? Who do you honor? Do you honor yourself? Do you honor who you are as a person?

Do You Facebook? Plus Free Podcast

So when men hang out together, it’s called a mantourage: four or five guys walking around – if you’ve ever seen the TV show Entourage – every man has his version of their own entourage. It’s called a mantourage.

A lot of guys just hang with the same guys every weekend. You’ve seen these mantourages cruise the bars every Friday and Saturday night – usually there’s a group of guys consistently drinking as if drinking were a sport!

They actually plan out their meals – “hey dude, we’ve got to eat pizza at 7:00, start drinking at 8:30, and you don’t want to have that extra slice because the alcohol will kick in faster!”

Living in California, there are lots of mantourages running around. If you’ve ever gone down to Manhattan Beach, there’s mantourages on the beach – they’re usually the group of guys with the keg, hanging out all day long like they are 20 years old again!

But they’re not. Then they go back to their group house that they share in their thirties, and they sit down on the lawn furniture that decorates their living room – they thought that was cool!

So what do women do? Well, women join chickourages!

Practice Your Storytelling By David Wygant

Do you know what is great? Practicing your storytelling. Women are attracted – actually, people in general are attracted to people who are charismatic and can tell a good story.

I know I’ve written blogs about telling stories before, but I want to go even deeper into this today. There are so many emotions that you can convey to people through stories. They tell something about your personality.

When you are there and you are talking to somebody, and they are in quiet mode – sometimes we’re in quiet mode, sometimes we’re in talkative mode – but let’s say this person is in quiet mode. All of a sudden, you start doing the talking – you’d better be interesting! All of us are interesting because we’ve all done things in our lives – but the difference is in the way we share that story.
