Shortcut In Life

Do you really wish that there were a shortcut in life for everything?

The other day someone told me that he wanted to get into my business after he listened to me talk about how I struggled for the first few years of my career. He told me he wanted to get into the business, and I asked him why.

He answered, “because I need to make money.” This is hardly the business to get into if you want to make money. You’re a nobody. What’s your platform? What do you stand for? Who are you?

That’s the funny thing about it – so many of us are all about instant gratification. You need to make money right away? Are you that short on cash? Well, get a job! Rob a bank!

There are no shortcuts. Anyone who is successful in anything in life has worked his or her ass off to get there. I don’t know anyone who has found a shortcut.

Now, granted – there are some easier ways to success – such as inheriting Daddy’s business. Some guys just happen to meet a great woman, marry her, and then, boom.

There are people who got involved in the dot com industry in the late nineties and instead of getting greedy actually cashed out in time – they probably haven’t really worked since. Is that luck? Sure, there is luck involved, but there are also smarts there.

But people hear that one story about the actor who became on overnight sensation. The thing you don’t hear about is the ten years it took that actor to become that “overnight” sensation.

I tell guys all of the time that I’ll give them the foundation, but they have to do all of the work. The foundation is the easy part – it’s the sticking with the foundation that is the challenge.

Hard work is tough for people. I don’t know why. There’s no sales letter advertising hard work: “do you want to work 100 hours a week for the first three years of your career? You’ll have to sacrifice everything…” Can you imagine that advertisement? How could you write that? Nobody would buy that product, even though it’s the one thing in the world everyone needs to have.

  1. Ah! That’s why enjoying your work is so important! Even though its not always going to be fun and games, it should overall be a good time for you! Enjoy Seattle David!

  2. David, I love this blog today! As you know, one of my all-time favorite quotes by the legendary Vince Lombardi is “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

This is so true. There are so many people who not only don’t want to have to work for anything, but even worse feel they should not have to work for anything. I am happy for those who have luck and achieve success quickly.

I have absolutely NO respect, however, for those who feel they are ENTITLED to everything they want in life without having to work for it. It shows a total lack of character. I have heard women actually say that they were not put on this earth to work, but instead were put on this earth for people to give them things and to spend other’s money …

David, you have worked incredibly hard and deserve all of your success :)

  3. Amen David! We live in society catered to shortcut seeking people. Lottery tickets, talentless reality tv stars, mindless daily stimulation in front of our instant feel good tv sets. It’s what people think they want and something that very few realize they actually end up suffering from. I guess the moral here is that nobody is cut from a different clothe than you. It’s just that some people dream of a instant fix, while others work hard everyday to make their lives better.

  4. So true David!!! Creepy stalker walk is never good!! I definitely would’ve approached a bunch of guys building sandcastles and I would’ve joined in too!!!

  5. Hey, is it just me or did your “older” site say “David Wygant – creating instant attraction” at the top?

I know you’re a hard working man and you encourage people to work hard.. all the time! That’s why it’s a little funny that it said so on your previous layout of this site :)

Great blog! Some people are always jelaous of other people’s success because we only get a sneak peek of it! Somehow we think that they get there easily.. Now I have to be honest here and say that I used to look up to those who were known for their great work.. especially those who are my age! I felt like I was being lazy and doing nothing.. But now I realize that everything comes with time.. and patience, and HARD work! I’ve always worked hard, and envied those who got their success faster.. :( (Obviously they have advantages, such as contacts through parents.. etc etc)

Another thing which amuses me is: why are actors always the standard of common “success”???
They’re just acting in front of camera! Think about it, you probably have a talent of your own.. playing music, singing, drawing, writing etc.. You do it passionately.. What separates you from the other talented celebritites, who do what they are passionate about!? Fame. They’re known to you…They have audience..
They are appreciated by thousands of people for their talents..

What do we want? Fame, appreciation from people we don’t know? Hmm..
What is success to you? To me it used to be the kind of “success” (you know, success = fame) that they have.. I don’t consider that success any longer. We all do something that is amazing!! We all have our own little successes :P

    Nice blog, David!

  6. Just me

Yes the old site did say create instant attraction

    Do you miss those words?

  7. haha, yes! put them up again :)

  8. David, I can’t believe this guy who gave you the “because I need the money” reason was not embarassed to say this …

What you’re talking about here David has nothing to do with people who “make it” through turns of luck or fate … or about folks who succeed quickly or “overnight.”

It’s the MINDSET of people that they should have success without BEING PREPARED to put in the necessary work and effort to get it. It is an “instant gratification” mindset … but it’s also an entitlement mindset.

When you coach people, David, I would imagine that some pick up what you teach amazingly fast (I think you’ve mentioned Yakub making quite an amazing transformation when he came to your bootcamp) while others have to work a little harder at it to get to that same place. The common denominator, though, is that they all are ready to put in whatever amount of work is necessary to reach their goal.

Not only that, but people who reach amazing goals and success have been prepared to FAIL along the way – and won’t quit when they do.

That is what I take from what you’re saying ….
