Happy Birthday!

Today is Saturday, May 30th, and I will be celebrating the birthday of the woman I love. It’s funny about birthdays.

I really don’t like mine, due to the fact that I always have the attitude that it is just another day. When it comes to making birthdays special for someone you love, however, that’s when the fun starts.

You get to shop for some presents and scatter them around the house, so they will have things to open all day long. You get to plan a fun dinner, and plan some great birthday surprises for after dinner.

I like doing the surprising better than being the one surprised. So today I will be laying out the surprises.

As one of my first surprises for her, I’d like to write a little note here to Sonja…

Sonja — As you know this whole day was and is about spoiling you. So, look at this as my birthday blog to you. As you know, I never write a blog as an open letter to any one person, but how would it look if I did not wish the woman I love huge birthday wishes on my blog? ;-)

Now, let’s not get all crazy. I am not making this into a “Tom Cruise jumps on Oprah’s couch” moment . . . but then again that moment gave him a ton of press publicity, so maybe I should give Oprah a ring and ask if I can jump on her couch and wish Sonja a happy birthday.

For now (and until I am able to arrange my couch jumping Oprah appearance), what I want to hear from all of you today is how you feel about birthdays.

Do you like your birthday, or do you just treat it like any other day?
What was your favorite birthday, and what did you do to celebrate it?
Which birthday made you think about something really deep and profound?

So Happy Birthday to Sonja, and to anyone else who shares a May 30th birthday with my girl!

I like my birthday because i always make a great party where i invite all the friends i haven’t seen in a long time, there isn’t anything better for me than have all my friends in one place

  2. I have not had a great birthday. I tried to have a hang out party for this year but it was a busy time for all of us. My friends and I just went to eat, but for some reason failed to make me feel special. Honestly, I didn’t even get a Happy Birthday song or special treatment.

But this one friend of mine called me right when the clock hit 12 am on my birthday and sang Happy Birthday to me. My new friends wanted to treat me out, without me even asking them to. That really makes me ponder about my old friends.

  3. Happy Birthday Sonja!

  4. Happy Birthday Sonja,

I know you will have a great one, your best present you got already in David. Just put a bow on yourself David ;-) Have a great day the two of you.

I do not see the point in celebrating birthdays, as I see them as just another day. I do love to surprise others with great presents that are personal and setting something up for them on their day.

But really equally just surprising someone out of the blue for no reason is my best kind of celebration. Any thing some gives me or sets up for me that show genuine thought behind really makes me happy.

Recently it was my late husband’s Birthday, that was really odd and not a too happy feeling. Sorry don’t mean to drag the blog down, but that was the only birthday I ever felt something profound about.

Best part with birthday is that friends makes a bigger effort to get together, and in that way a birthday is a great thing.

  5. Feliz cumpleaños Sonja!

My favorite birthday party was some years ago when I threw a halloween/b-day costume party (as my b-day is november 2).
Throwing big parties can be tiresome, so in recent years I’ve just invited a couple of close friends to eat cake.

I prefer to make my friends b-day’s noticed. Once, my roommate didn’t want me to tell anybody it was her b-day, so I pasted a sheet on me that said “I’m with B-day girl” and stayed around her all day long!

  6. Happy b-day Sonja!

  7. Too funny David. My b-day is tomorrow. Wish her a happy b-day from all of us bro.

  8. Happy Birthday Sonja :)

  9. Gaby, thats sweet!

  10. It’s funny, I force myself to hate celebrating birthdays because I thought it was the day my mom suffered… But then again, I also secretly wish that someone will sing me a Happy B’day song and I’m satisfied. Weird, weird me… =P

    Happy Birthday Sonja!

I think birthdays are what you make of it. For me, it definitely is a time to reflect upon where I am in my life and cheerish the friends and family that I have. Marina– I totally relate to how birthdays can be bitter sweet when it is of a loved one who has passed. My father passed away when I was young and I remember birthdays being more like anniversaries of his death.

I just had a BIG birthday and am about to celebrate this coming weekend with a party my friends are throwing… I definitely have mixed feelings with this one!

  12. Happy B Day To Your Lady she is sure lucky to have a guy like you Dave….Oh I have one question what did wonderdog Daphne give her…

My birthdays I usually am silent about especially at work for they love to announce on the intercom this is so and so’s b day go by and wish them a happy b day. So I do like my b days it reminds me of my childhood spent with family and friends…..

  13. Happy Birthday Sonja!

I have never had a “normal” birthday because mine is on Xmas day. It usually means that I spend it with family and not so much with friends. And it never was a “big thing”.

I spent my most remarkable birthday on Grenada in the Caribbean. Unfortunately, there was a storm on that day, the waves were really high and looked exciting. So I decided to to go for a swim against all warnings. It was easy to get in and a lot of fun to play with the waves. But when I tried to get out of the water, the waves started to play with me and when I eventually reached the shore again, I was really, really tired.

It could have easily been my last birthday, but then it felt a bit like my first birthday.

  14. A very Happy Birthday to you Sonja … and a belated happy birthday to you Coach Kimberly!!!

  15. Happy Birthday Sonja!!! :-D
Growing up I never got to celebrate my birthday, so once I was out on my own I made it my day. A day where I would do whatever I wanted to do. The best birthday was when I planned a trip to AZ, and got to learn yoga while the sun set in the desert.
I think that birthdays are a way to celebrate the person that you are/ the special person in your life.
The birthday that made me look deeper into life was my 25th. My life radically changed in the three years before hand and it really hit me that I was where I was in life. I never thought I would be where I was in life in the years before. So really looking and reflecting on the choices of my life made me realize I had to look deeper and have a less shallow view on life.
Again Happy Birthday Sonja and Everyone that shares it!!! I hop that you have a day that you will remember for a long time. =-)

  16. happy birthday!! from all of us

  17. Happy Birthday Sonja

  18. Happy Birthday Sonja!! Hope you had a great one! :)

And a great trip to the Caymans!

  19. Happy birthday to Sonja and all the May babies!!!

I think birthdays are time for you to celebrate how great you are. There are years when I didn’t feel like celebrating just because I didn’t know what I’d want to celebrate it for… but more often than not, some friends of mine always found ways to make me feel special.

And that’s how I know I have great friends.
