Do you remember the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off?
It was so great when Ferris went over to Cameron’s house and just said, “I think today we’re going to take a day off.” They stole Cameron’s dad’s car and basically spent the day driving like maniacs through Chicago and having an incredible time.
Have you ever been on a Ferris Bueller date? Instead of planning your date so precisely – rather than saying, “well, we need to meet for dinner at 8:00 and then have a drink at 9:30 and then afterwards…” – no! Be spontaneous!
Have a Ferris Bueller date. Go out and have a purely spontaneous and fun day. Start off with something like taking a drive into the country. Pick a random exit to get off on – any exit – and from that exit find the Main Street, find a cool restaurant to eat at, and find some cool shops. Then get back into the car and on the interstate and do it again! Pick another random exit. We can call it ‘random exiting.’
If you’re in a city, walk around town, and whenever your date says ‘left’ or ‘right’ go down a different block. You’ll find different stores, cafes – whatever it might be.
If you live out in the country, you can do the same exact thing. Go for a drive, get off at a random exit and explore a new town.
The most important thing is to have a Ferris Bueller date – where you just go and get lost with each other and have a good time. Do this instead of having everything so rigid and planned, and instead of being so uptight.
Instead of worrying about what to do and when to do it, why don’t you just be spontaneous?
Do you ever go to rest stops and people watch? You can guess where all of the people are going to and coming from. I used to love doing that on a date. We would sit there and create all these back-stories for these families and other travelers. This also teaches you how to people watch and observe.
Another fun thing to do is to go and watch planes take off, and just guess where they are heading. You’ll never really know – but who cares? That’s what is fun. Or go to the airport and just watch everyone stress out for an hour and a half.
There are lots of fun things to do. Get creative and spontaneous. Make it your own Ferris Bueller date!
Lol, I love that movie and the analogy. Personally, I like to plan just enough to have an idea of things to do… but yeah, spontaneity tend to win in the end.
Great idea having a Ferris Bueller Date! We can all learn and enjoy some spontaneity in our dating lives. I believe we’ve all suppressed our creative and adventurous sides through the years and this spills into our dating lives. People tend to develop the herd mentality and do whats safe. Unfortunately safe is BORING! Boring and safe limits our true potential with the opposite sex by making us predictable and not our selves. Everyone should try something different when going on on a date instead of the usual job interview date of resume exchaning over some meal or drinks.
I remember it well : ) Cameron was in total shock and disbelief when his dad’s prize car when straight thru the back window and into a ditch.

ya, that movie is incredible, just because of its vibe. It’s random, adventureous, spontaneous, unplanned, etc. Exactly how the ideal date should be. Or don’t even call it a date! Cause that implies planning in and of itself. Go to “hang out.” As a guy, just do what you want to do! take the girl along with you! show them your world!

That’s actually how I plan most of my outings. I just have a general direction of what I COULD do… and I start there. What happens next or in between activities is totally spontaneous. It makes dating so much more fun.
Planning places or activities is just to give a direction to the date… but it should never be the GOAL to go to a place or do a specific thing with the person you are out with.
