I agree that love is sometimes not enough.

I really liked Lauren's comment about learning relationship skills. Thankfully at least now even though these are not taught mainstream they are becoming more widely available. Some places always offer this type of teaching such as your local church. Even MLM companies can - eg Amway - yes, Amway - lol!

Has anyone else seen the inspirational ABC documentary 'Secrets To Love'? That one was brilliant where seemingly destroyed relationships were able to be restored.

Unfortunately we all have egos and these can run rampant if not kept in check - go for love at all times - love is patient, love is kind, love does not envy...

I know the importance of all that and usually can hang very well with it. Yet, there are moments that come up now and then. I think that's being human. It's just good to remain aware and own our moments of slipping into less than our best self.

Lauren,

That urge to say something when you oh so know you are right is your ego.... but in the heat of the moment.... does it really matter who's right or wrong?

Personally, I don't look at who's right or wrong... I look at what emotions makes someone feels good.

You don't convince people to your cause by telling them you are right. You convince them by making them feel you are right.

Kimberly,

I think experience and being comfortable with myself. I don't take things personally if I can see that someone is triggered themselves.

Working with angry inmates for many years has been good practice! I am almost always able to stay centered because I know it is not personal. They then start winding down and change how they are relating.

Still, I do have my buttons and where I still have work to do is not having to make my point when I am oh so certain I AM RIGHT! You know, that feeling when you say to yourself don't say it and then you hear the words coming out of your mouth!

I am grateful, though, that I cannot remember the last time I "hit below the belt". I do not believe in hurting someone in their vulnerable places.

What tools do you use, Coach Kimberly?

Lauren--great point. It's difficult to really step back and not react when those buttons are pushed. What helps you to stop and listen before reacting?

Matt

I have zero interest in basketball....do not watch a second of it. I am all about the nfl and thats it.

My sports interest shuts down after the super bowl and only mildly perks up during the mets season.

I thought David would be talking about Selection Sunday and the March Madness Tournament :) Which is easily the most exciting tournament or playoff style in any sport in my opinion. Are you gonna write a blog about it this week?? LOL

Good point, I think. I was just thinking the other day that love does not conquer all. As you point out, it takes some relationship skills.

Relationship skills aren't usually taught in school or at home. So, where would we turn without people such as yourself? Fortunately, we CAN learn these skills.

I know I still fall in with that knee-jerk reaction at times. It takes a lot of emotional maturity when a "button" gets pushed to take a deep breath, step back, and maybe most importantly, to try to understand where the other person is coming from.

Compassion can be such a powerful healer in relationship. Forget about who is right and who is wrong - unless you want to end up laying alone in bed mulling that one over!
