If you believe something bad is going to happen, then there is a big chance something bad might happen....or so you perceive. Because you have that mindset in that moment, any outcome that comes your way you will perceive as negative. Nice podcast. So David, How did the interaction with the cops go? I'm sure most guys have had a night where they went out and accidentally (or intentionally) had a little bit too much to drink. Did the women you tried to talk to do anything crazy when you tried to talk to them when you were so hammered you could barely pronounce your own name? It never happened to me. So if they won't yell at you or hit you if you're piss-ass drunk (well, assuming you didn't try to grope them), just imagine how much more receptive they'll be to real, normal, sober you!

Collin, I read the email and nope, the guy wasn't drunk at all. In fact, his comment to the woman wasn't even offensive! What was really going on was his PERCEPTION of the situation. She was really only "yelling" at him in his own head. If you think you're going to get rejected hardcore when attempting to meet a new person, then ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS will be skewed and amplified toward that idea of rejection IN YOUR OWN HEAD. If you realize that there is no such thing as "rejection"--because there really isn't--then pretty soon you'll start seeing the world that way and you'll start recognizing every encounter for what it really is: it's just that, it's an ENCOUNTER. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe you two had some chemistry, maybe not, but she (or he) certainly did not "reject" you. This is something that hits women particularly hard, this false perception of being rejected by a man, and it's something that many guys don't even see going on because it's happening on such a subliminal level...

Collin, no worries and no need to apologize!! Feel free to say whatever you want man ;) And GA Tech (and other tech schools) is certainly no anomaly when it comes to people walking around in a comatose state! I spent 3 yrs in law school and it's the same deal everywhere. When you look on the street around you, everyone's all wrapped up thinking about our their crap all day long, everywhere. Most of us are all slumping around, waiting for things to happen to us. Waiting for hot dates to fall in our laps! Guess what? Ain't gonna happen. People really are waiting to be woken up, to be talked to and stimulated... problem is that there's more people waiting and less people DOING. That's why it's your job to provide that wakeup call! Be friendly, be fresh, and be fun!

really good podcast :D i wanna share a story about a "one time".so,one night i was in the bus station and 2girls ,i'll call them girlA and B where standing next to me and they where talking about why the bus is not coming, they where tired... i turn'd and started to talk to girl A asked her simple how long did they been here... and she started talking to me ,i had my smile on ,after 3-4 second girl B turned really annoyed and said to me ironicaly,"why r u trying to talk to us ?"her face expression was i'm gonna kick u ,leave us" i replyed very enthusiastic "ooh c'mon ,tell me i was that bad? " and girl B said "yes ,leave us!" now girl A was really friendly and, told me that her friend is in a bad mood had a problem,i told girl B to be more happy about life and stuff,after 1-2 minutes of talk my bus came and girl A was smiling because the way i engaged her friend,i leaved them smiling and girl B said with a smile "oo that guy annoys me so much, why is he so happy". but u see after a couple of days i started talking with another girl and i felt like my legs where melting (and she was not some hottie):))and after 1 minute i became mute :)) what to do ? and i travel alot with the bus ,why don' u make a blog about how to approach in this area. have a good day

Sorry Shogo, I wasn't trying to suggest that he was drunk. I was just pointing out that even when women probably would have pretty good reason to yell at a guy, they still don't. A completely sober guy asking which guitar a woman is looking at or whether or not the honeybaked ham is any good is never going to be yelled at, especially here in the south. People just talk to strangers a lot more here than I've seen elsewhere. Actually, I'm really curious about something. It always seemed so weird to me that so many people here at Georgia Tech won't talk to people and stare at the ground as they're walking. I know engineering tends to attract a lot of socially awkward people, but is this the case at places like CalTech and MIT as well?

Shogo, you make a good point. Not only do people need to be woken up, but they ENJOY being woken up. A guy just being sociable to a girl in class is so rare here, they love it. I still feel like I have so far to go in improving my approach/conversation skills, yet it seems like I can't log onto Facebook without a girl IMing me these days. My favorite was probably a couple months ago when a girl came out and told me that her friend liked me and that I should ask her out. As crazy as it seems, being even just a little different gets lots of results!

It sounds like David's general premise for life is "Yes is the goal, No is how you get there"...which is incidentally the subtext of a little book I was reading the other day called "Go for No!" The basic premise is that instead of focusing on the number of positive sales outcomes, you should instead set a goal for number of negative/failure outcomes. In setting a lofty failure goal and trying to reach it you will invariably come out with an abundance of success stories. Basically, the same can be said for approaching women. More "No" will ultimatley equate to more "Yes", but you need a lot of data points in order to ultiamtely have scalable positive results.

Great Podcast as always David! I was listening to it when I was reading about the Scottish tennis player Andy Murray, and thought, he's a guy who works hard but has the wrong attitude and body language. I agree with 90 per cent with what you said about approaching women. 90 per cent of them from where I'm from will just walk away or ignore you in the worst senario. Though I know Belfast or Glasgow girls who will knock a guy's lights out if she thinks the guy is coming within 3ft of her. It's extremely rare in most parts of the world, but you have to know your enviroment eg. some muslim countries. I was once with a friend in Brno (Czech Republic), feeling pumped up because of all the babes and I approached a girl in the clothes shop and told her she looked lovely in her dress. Next thing two guys from Albania came over and threatened to shoot me. You can imagine how I felt, but I here to tell the tale. I must be one of those minority of guys who when he thinks the worst when approaching it turns out great. And when I'm 100 per cent positive, it ends up a disaster. Probably wired up wrong lol. Just wondering if you could do a small podcast on how to stop being the warm up guy and to block guys stepping on my turf. Cheers for the great podcast. I'm going to listen to it tomorrow morning, then approach all the babes at the Prague half marathon; they'll be too tired to fight back. Eye of the tiger.

Shogo, if you could do the bus experiment and report back, that would be REALLY appreciated. I'm a girl and I catch a bus frequently and there's this one guy who is always on it too, and is gorgeous and I can never tell if he's interested or not. I really don't know what to look for, and I don't know if he's just shy, or not interested. A lot of times I feel like I can feel/see him looking over trying to catch a glance, but then I doubt myself. All I want is to somehow get him to instigate a conversation so we can take it from there. I don't know how to read the signs to see if he's interested/shy or just not interested/taken.

To clarify my previous comment, we catch the bus from the same bus stop, so there's this 10-15 minute wait period where we're just waiting around - I don't run onto him on the bus first, we see each other there at the bus stop, and then endure the bus ride. So. HOW DO I GET HIM TO TALK TO ME...?

I am bringing back fate, divine timing, and instinct and hereby donating my dating self help books (instead, I will take my journal to starbucks and see real people), cancelling Plenty of Fish and EHarmony and Match.com and CL, and no longer haunting the hardware stores to meet men nor choosing various Meetups groups that are male dominated. I am going Dating Rogue. Would Spencer Tracy do Eharmony? Would Don Draper be on Plenty of Fish? Just sayin'

@David: thank you for encouregement i'm looking on your blog for some time but now i wanna speak too :P @Joe A: man you are funny :D Today i was on the field it just happened that i promoted something with some guys give to people some flyers ask them"hhi,how is your day today, what do you think about this...."and also trying to get their opinion. i spoke with about 25 people and the reaction was. alot of them special the girls where more responsive when i was in charge with power attitude,some people where kinda negative but finaly whe talked,to invited me to sit down and have a long discution :)) and only 1 ,only one girl told me no i don't wanna talk to you,she was kinda negative ,and i left :))and i was asking q 70% about themselves. it was really fun :D

That is a Lie david,the mindset thing doesn't work and here's an example: when I was a teen back in 9th grade I went to a dance with a great mindset,My mindset & confidence was that I'm gonna have fun, dance with alot of women, meet alot of women,& etc what happened? I left all alone, my friends all had the girls and I left sad and lonely. Mindset has never worked for Me, I go into everyday life with confidence and positivity and what comes out of it? Sadness. Mindset doesn't work...sorry =/

Hey Pete, if all you're referring to is that one event in the 9th grade, it either says you're still too young or you only had one bad experience to let everything fall apart for you, or both. If you're still a young kid, there's a lot you have to learn still and really build up your foundation on "mindset". It's taken me 3 years but it was worth it because I can pretty much James Bond any woman I come across. If you're a little older and can only refer back to this one event, it just goes to show that you need to build up your mindset and piece your life together, and yes... really build that foundation of inner-game. Without a foundation my friend, a small little nick and your BIG confidence will fall apart. Mindset works, but you gotta have the mindset to make that mindset work :P

Actually David and Shogo and all - then can't touch this!!!! STRANGE THING: Your joke actually kind of really happened to me - so I have been getting anxiety since. I approached 30 women at the Mall patted 25 of them and all were glad I spoke to them and they were all giggly. But the 31st woman, she looked at me smiled as she ate food at the food court, she was not all that attractive but was blond and slim so ok i guess from 30 feet away. So I approached her, when I spoke to her and got a close look I realized not my type not worthy. But I had a polite smile and greeted her, she went silent (like her hubby or looser man or something was nearby somewhere getting food, who knows). Well 30 minutes latter after chatting with some more women, 5 MALL SECURITY officers approached me and asked If I have been going around the mall talking to women trying to strike up conversations. I said yes maybe. They then told me a lady had complained that some stranger approached her. I gave them a bemused smile and said - huh- no way! They spoke to me for 10 minutes and said "at the Mall all kinds of people come some are married, some have children, the bars and clubs are the suggested places - if I want to avoid this happening." So I said, the bars and clubs are no go as drinking is against my religion- spirituality and low quality people go to bars and clubs not my type. One of the more muscular Mall Security Man said 'I go to bars and Clubs' to meet women and there good there. I looked at him in the eyes and said no no no, I like brainy classy women who are much rare and hard to find - only the real world is big enough to meet such women worthy of being good friends. I added plus look at all the other guys doing the same, I am not the only one doing this - I made that up about others doing it as I have no idea. At that point he looked stunned and said Ok Sir you have a nice day - just be careful - not everybody likes to talk to people. I said I respect that, but not my problem!

@B Initiate contact with him first. There's no problem with this. Whether he likes you or not, you won't know until you both have a conversation with one another. Your second guessing yourself by giving yourselves excuses. "Is he taken?" "He might not like me" "I don't know the signs that he's attracted to me, so I can't tell, I won't approach". Tell these thoughts to go away and get out of your head. Go over to him with the attitude, the vibe of just being friendly. Open your mouth and comment something from the surrounding environment, ask him a question, or make an observation about him. You can even play around with the approach (and let him approach you, like you wanted). Example, While he's not mobile and in one spot, walk past him (or get up and move to a different seat and make sure he notices you. Don't be afraid to make eye contact) and accidentally drop something near his feet. And then sit down... That's it. Any decent person will look at that dropped object and say to himself "Oh wait, this lady dropped something, I better return it to her..." and would go up to you and give you that phone that you "accidentally dropped." Take that opportunity to start a conversation. There are many ways to talk to this guy, in having him approach you or you approach him, because the beginning doesn't matter as much as you think it does. Besides, no matter where, no matter who, no matter what you do, it will always be a movie moment, as long as you let it be one. Take chances and never have regrets. Hope this helps B. and don't worry about the outcome, because what you want is already here. It's just the journey that hasn't begun yet. And when it does, enjoy it, take pictures, and go on little detours, because before you know it... You'll already be there, at your destination.
